right-wing “Stalinist liars” … why not just right-wing “liars” ?

Seriously, the rhetoric shouldn’t become so broad that the ubiquitous attempt to spin the story of the decade to give a narrative that favors your party’s role becomes “erasing history” a la “Stalin.”

The Stalinist nature of these history-erasing ideologues is truly scary. As they go down in history’s flames, the lies they tell keep getting bigger and bigger:

I was there. We inherited a recession from President Clinton and we inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation’s history. And President Bush dealt with it. And within a year of his presidency at this comparable time, unemployment was at 5 percent. And we were creating jobs.

Besides, The Dish is educated enough to know that Stalinism is far from the only ideology that tried to radically rewrite history as part of its thought-control apparatus.

Anyway, I don’t why Andrew applies this kind of extraneous labels, rather than explaining just how bad what he’s criticizes is, so the reader can distinguish it from other things we should be criticial about. It could be an issue of temperament. I.e., it’s more emetic for him to include a label instead of offering detail for the cause of his pain.

Or maybe Andrew is one of those more secular folks who are most comfortable thinking inside a demonology. That is to say, if someone is bad, he’s almost never bad in a prosaic way but in a fantastic way, an unknowing emissary of evil. This might be one area in common that Andrew has with Michael Goldfarb.

  1. […] Maybe Andrew for his part can stop hectoring people at the Corner and engaging them directly, without demonizing insults. […]
