How not to feel grief watching this tribute to a centenerian Vanuatu chief, who is dying along with his culture? Or maybe grief at this kind of human loss is Luddite or reactionary. But I don’t think so. It’s, in a word, wise.

He is congratulating himself purely for the feeling of pity — not for any action at all … Tells you a lot about how he can interpret other people’s tragedies and the value of his moral viewpoint.

If only we could bring Nietzsche out from around the corner, like Woody Allen did with Marshall McCluhan.
